In the Basic Strategies Development class, students are working early in the process of acquiring

The WIDA Can-Do standards can be found at wida.gov.

English. By the WIDA Can-do standards, they are “entering” at level one and “emerging” at level two. In this class we focus on language development in the context of everyday situations with readings from a variety of sources. We also utilize instructional software titles that aid in language acquisition.  Those titles include My Virtual Reading Coach by Mindplay, ESL Reading Smart, and new to 2017-2018, ReadTheory.org.  Each of these applications uses student data and metrics to tailor ENL instruction to the individual student.

The International Seminar class includes students who are “developing” and “expanding” their skills in English. This class works on PBLs (Project-Based Learning Projects) in the PNN News Room and Studio to produce a segment for the

PNN News Show called The World Report.  Using the PNN model RUNDOWN and SCRIPT, we write and produce stories about what is happening outside the US borders, beyond Bittersweet in other words.  This class values the many cultures that come together in the PNN newsroom, and it embraces the experiences these writers have had before they arrived in Mishawaka, Indiana.  By counting these experiences and understandings as valued assets, students are able to publish

writing with an authoritative voice.

    Its Friday! Hope everyone has had a great first week back from Break. Today is a busy day; today is the last day to submit your scripts and to get your presentation recorded. So here is our to do list: 1. "Story Time"-Opener 2. Finish Script and SUBMIT! (Today is the last day to submit your written script. Remember, the written script is a REQUIRED submission and will be graded. If you have not already made this available to us through Google Drive, check your email. You have an email from Mr. McNulty, which you can follow to Google Drive and create a NEW document, LABELED your name, and PASTED your paper to). 3. RECORD! (The recording is also due today! Once again, if you would not like your presentation to be a part of the Cultural Festival Video, please let me or Mr. McNulty know. You are still required to submit to myself and Mr. McNulty the video; however, it will only be used as part of the project grade, and kept out of the Cultural Festival Video). 4. If you have not began recording today, your script must still be submitted by the end of the hour! 4. Recording: As soon as you are finished with your script, come find me or Mr. McNulty, so that we can get your script recorded. This will be edited on Friday! All recording MUST be done by Friday! Important Note: If you are not sure about what types of dance, food or music are traditional to your country, you can look it up!     Good morning, kiddos! Ms. Fleetwood will be running the class today, and she will help you get your essential work done. 1. Every one of your papers should have a main argument, a thesis statement.  Please copy and paste your thesis statement into this assignment so that I may read it.  I gave you a couple of examples in the assignment. 2. How is your DRAFT 01 coming along?  I hope that you have a couple of pages of writing by now.  It does not need to be complete by the end of this week, but I would like you to turn in a draft that has at least 300 words in it.  At the end you should have two or three sources listed.  And finally, there should be quite a few quotes from those sources in your writing.  Read more in the instructions to the assignment. 3. Writers' Workshop:  Ms. Fleetwood is going to try to work with each of you today as you write DRAFT 01; if she does not get over to you, try sharing it with me, and I will try to give you some feedback from afar. 4. You are still rocking the readtheory.org. You took about 100 quizzes over the weekend, and your Lexile jumped three points since last week. Please begin the day with 20 minutes work on a few quizzes, and if you have a hundred, please make sure you have turned in a screenshot of your results screen here.   2. Your Research Project: when I return on Thursday, we will work on crafting your outline.  Before then, you should add a couple more sources.  Use this assignment to show me your note-taking on one of your other resources. 3. Please finish our reading on Immigration and take this quiz. 4. Next assignment is a fun one.  You will be creating an infographic. Give it a try! 5. Homework or next class: after the quiz (& infographic), let's think about immigration just a bit more by reading a news article. Is this a big deal? Please tell me here.

Well, this assignment is scheduled to close at midnight tonight too.  So please get it done and turned in today, before the bell rings. 5. Here are a couple things I would like you to accomplish today.   1. ReadTheory.org:  you are doing a fine job in this program!  As a class, you have taken 375 quizzes, you have built 7,415 knowledge points, and your program average Lexile level is 454.  You should be proud of those numbers.  Most of you are working very hard, and you are beating the other class in quizzes and knowledge points. Beginning with ReadTheory Quiz #6, there are some new requirements.  We have a goal to reach in December, and this is how we are going to do it.  Please begin today! 2. The Great Pumpkin Storyboard- you are doing a fine job with it, but I cannot give you feedback on your writing unless they are turned in using Google Drive and the SHARE link.  Please remember to make me an editor. That will allow me to give you feedback like this: Please work with your partner to make necessary changes and resubmit it. 3. Mindplay. For the remainder of the class, please commit to getting your two hours of Mindplay done.  4.     Good morning, all, and happy Wednesday!  You are halfway through the week. Here are a couple things I would like you to accomplish today.   1. ReadTheory.org:  you are doing a fine job in this program!  As a class, you have now taken 393 quizzes, you added over 300 knowledge points yesterday to get to 7,783 knowledge points, and your Lexile average ticked up to 455.  Nice work!  Most of you are working very hard, and you are still beating the other class in quizzes and knowledge points. As you now know, beginning with ReadTheory Quiz #6, there are some new requirements.  My birthday party is a goal for December, and working on it each day will get us there. So please begin class today with 30 minutes of work on ReadTheory.org. 2. The Great Pumpkin Storyboard- you are doing a fine job with it.     Good morning. I hope you are enjoying this unexpected snow day. However, please remember that it is an eLearning day.  What that means is you are going to receive assignments from your Gold day teachers through Canvas or Google Classroom.  It is important that you complete those assignments too.  In the eLearning model, your completion of those assignments factors into the district attendance.  Therefore, please meet the deadlines of those assignments.  Of course, you can also work on assignments for my class to keep up or get ahead. If you need help, I will be available all day.
